Traditional Old House
Olhão - Portugal

This house is not part of the historical centre of the town but is only a ten minute walk from it. It was built before 1951 but we could not get any information about the exact date of its construction. When we started the renovation of this "giant bathroom",  - as I like to call it due to it's massive amount of tiles - we had no idea that we would find vaults or a traditional staircase. It took a year's work to bring it back to life and restore the charm it had lost..

Some walls were destroyed to create larger spaces because in these fishermen's houses, the corridors serve small and blind rooms (it was necessary to be able to accommodate large families in a hundred square meters). We also created skylights in this long dark corridor. All the doors were made double and with a glass part on the upper part, according to the architectural tradition of the city, the patio was opened, the well and the staircase redesigned, and a bedroom with bathroom was built on the terrace.

The kitchen units were built in cement to remind the old kitchens and all the floors were changed of course, giving a more traditional look to the whole house.

Finally, the facade was completely restored, again with sky-blue tiles, aluminium doors and windows. These materials were much used by the owners in the 70s and 80s because they were cheaper than wood and easier to maintain. So we covered the tiles and painted the façade white and changed the door and windows to wood with interior shutters according to the architecture of traditional houses in southern Portugal.
